HAPPY GREEN BEER AND CORNED BEEF DAY

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PRESIDENTIAL NOTES PRIOR TO THE NEXT MEETING AND BRING YOUR IDEAS AND COMMENT

PRESIDENTIAL NOTES

While on the internet recently visiting SDC sites, I happened to bring up the Southern Nevada chapter of SDC website. One of the things I found interesting was that it seems they somewhat share their website and officers with the chapter from southern Utah. And what was even more interesting, and surprising to me, was that their Christmas party was attended by only 10 people. Minutes from their recent chapter meetings showed attendance figures to be about half of the Sagebrush chapter. I really thought this was peculiar, given their population base must be about 7 times greater than ours. As SDC continues to mature, I wonder if we’ll see more chapters intertwine, and possibly even consolidate. I’M NOT ADVOCATING THIS, BUT IT’LL BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS OR SO!

One can hardly help noticing that our weather is starting to cooperate. Sunny and in the 60’s! (Ed note- This newsletter is going to press during a cooling streak- guess it isn’t summer yet!) Somehow sounds Studebaker related. This weather we are having can really get us up or down. Cold and snow can be hazardous to one’s health. I injured my back shoveling snow last month, and it’s gotten progressively worse - to the point that the pain is more than I care to talk about. Suffice it to say that now we’ve got our 60 degree days and I can’t do what I want, that being to work on our 1960 Hawk!

Our Hawk restoration progress has been progressing slowly but surely. The body is stripped of all mechanicals, trim and upholstery. Some trim items need to be rechromed, and people have warned me that this would be expensive- and they were right! Last summer, while at the SDC International meet, I met a man from Ohio who was selling rechromed Hawk bumpers for $300 each. After checking prices around here, it seemed logical that I should talk to this man again. When I phoned him at the end of February, he was just leaving the big swap meet in York, PA. He had taken 10 Hawk front bumpers to the meet and sold all but one of them. As we talked, I began to feel comfortable with his knowledge and integrity and the quality of the items he should be supplying. I have since mailed him a check for over $700 for 2 bumpers and a center cowl moulding. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

Here’s hoping that everyone gets their Studebakers running in 2008! See you soon!

News from your Editor Cappy

First, there was a turnout of at least 4 members (5 if you include staff member Jay Hubbard) to the Wax and Shine and accompanying talk on upholstery last month. These included Art Van Dyke, Charlie Case, Ralph Capurro and Tom Wise. Please note the next Wax and shine events at the National Auto Museum in Reno in the Events calendar and plan on attending. The talks are always informative and talking cars with other motorheads is always fun.

Second, previous Prez Notes have talked about, in part, tours and other events to show off our cars. Some ideas are also in the Events calendar below. Think about which ones would be attractive to you and attend if you can!

Third, if members would like to contribute their houses to sponsor a tour/show and tell/pot luck during the tour months of May through September, then let Prez Schnell and Pete Kronenberg know! Their phone numbers are listed on the letterhead!

Fourth, as discussed in last months newsletter there will be a “Honor the War Veterans” parade and car show here in Carson City on May 17, 2008. Detailed information is seen in the events calendar below. I hope that the club will be interested in participating.

Fifth, you may notice a slight change in the events calendar. I am trying to include other events other than car shows/tours, etc that might reflect the interests of our members, other than in cars. Please let me know if you like this or if it is just a waste of time and ink! Also changed is the highlighting of those events that are either local in nature or might be of keen interest to some members. Enjoy!

Sixth, last year the club contributed some funds to a youth group to send 2 members back to their National meet and participate in car diagnosis competition. Last meeting, a committee of 4 people (Carol Case, Pete Kronenberg, Gary Crabtree and Ralph Capurro) was formed to look into the possibility of helping a student or a school organization (such as a high school auto shop) get a Studebaker truck or car on the road. We are not particularly thinking of restoring the vehicle, just making it roadworthy and presentable should it go to a local car show. Any suggestions or donations that members might have would be most welcome. Bring these ideas to our next meeting.

Seventh, the committees to put on the Orphan Meet are busy working to accomplish our goal of at least 35-40 cars at this years event. All committees have been chaired, but these committees will need some help before, during and after the event. Please contact the committee chairs or the event co-chairs (Bud Domas and Charlie Case) if you are willing to help; and if someone asks for your help either on a committee or during the event, please help us out!

Eighth, next year’s SW Zone Meet will be in Milpitas (Sequoia Chapter) followed in 2009 in Sacramento area (Karel Staple Chapter) so I hope most of our members will be able to attend these. More information as it comes to us regarding dates and interest in caravaning.

Last, Happy (but also safe) motoring during these unsettled and varying weather conditions. We need you to participate in all the tours and events we have planned for the Sagebrush members. See you there!

SECRETARY NOTES:

Meeting of February 19, 2008@ Roundtable Pizza-Carson

Members present: President Schnell and Mary, Cases, Gary Crabtree and guest, Van Dykes, John Erb, Louise Young, Pat Hansen, Pete Kronenberg, Terry Ressler, Albert Replogle, Bud Domas, Ralph Capurro.

The February, 2008 meeting of the Sagebrush Studebaker Chapter (SDC) began promptly at 7pm at the Round Table Pizza-North Carson City. The meeting was called to order by President Larry Schnell.

Secretary’s report: The minutes of the January, 2008 meeting was read by Charlie Case. No corrections of importance were noted and were approved as read.

Treasurer’s report: Gary Crabtree reported we have $1,028.29 in checking and $8,264.04 in savings and the books balance. $48 in dues were received and we have 16 paid members. Gary has mailed letters to those who haven’t renewed, but it is too soon to gauge the response yet. The 50/50 raffle brought in $9.00, Christmas payment $13.00 and $2.66 interest earned in January. He paid $100.00 national dues and transferred $1,000.00 to savings. No earnings from investments which are zero. Charlie state he had spoken to Gary in the past about buying a short term CD with some of our savings. No earnings from investments which are zero. Charlie stated he had spoken to Gary in the past about buying a short term CD with some of our savings. Considerable discussion ensued and Larry felt we had enough cushion and could afford to invest more over a longer period of time (1 year) without adversely affecting our treasury. Thereupon, Charlie made a motion to invest $5,000 in a long term CD and allow Gary latitude in selecting the best deal. Colonial Bank offers a favorable CD rate. A money market fund isn’t FDIC protected and John Erb said that the price of gold just went down and interest rates tend to go up when that happens. Motion 2nd and passed.

Old Business:

  1. Larry called International SDC Awards Chairman, Jen Carstene, regarding Jim Webb’s service pin. His national membership expired on August 6th of 2006. He currently has 23 years in SDC with one break in service and received his 20 year pin after reinstatement. Larry said a person can NOT pay back dues to buy time, but you can pay current dues and be reinstated, then continue accruing time where you left off. In otherwords, it doesn’t have to be continuous as some Sagebrush members thought, just accumulative. These rules were changed by the national club some time ago to reflect this policy. Ralph made a motion to pay one year dues for Jim Webb, whereupon discussion ensued; whether this could become a “fait-accompli” for others in the future. Charlie stated this was a one time thing to honor a revered member who was responsible for chartering the Sagebrush chapter many years ago. Bud Domas then asked to amend Ralph’s motion to renew Jim’s SDC annual membership on an ongoing basis; the motion was seconded and was passed unanimously. Gary will renew Jim’s membership and have the “Turning Wheels” sent directly to him, but the invoice sent to Gary to pay. Jim’s membership is #040199S.

  2. Tour Master Report- Pete has called several municipalities regarding our participation in their various events and parades. The Truckee Chamber of Commerce was very receptive to Pete’s inquiry and will send him the appropriate application for their 4th of July parade. They had 27 entries last year. We will have to submit individual applications for each participant, however due to liability issues. The Reno C of C was lukewarm to auto participation since their July 4th celebration is primarily equine oriented. However, Hot August Nights (HAN) will allow individual groups to participate the first night without registration fees. We would have to register to enable us to participate in the Wednesday cruise night. There wouldn’t be any conflict with the car push. Pete will get more info on the Truckee and HAN events. Regarding the Christmas dinner, Pete indicated that he has talked with Carson Station Grill and it is available and booked for 12/09/2008 for the club.

  3. Additional Tours Option- Ralph brought up the possibility of touring to Franz Spychers annual membership meeting of Karel Staple Chapter, our nearest SDC neighbor, on May 18th (Sunday). He urged our participation and possible help with their planned 2009 SW Zone meet in repayment for their help with our Boomtown meet. This year, the 2008 SW Zone meet will be in Milpitas, CA and those who are planning to attend should tour together. It is scheduled for October 10-12 at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Terry Ressler reminded the group that we should plan on sponsoring a trophy for both the 2008 and 2009 meets as is customary.

  4. Orphan Car Meet- June 14, 2008 (Sat)- Bud Domas gave a short report on the progress made to date. All committee meeting chairmen have been met with personally by Bud and Charlie, outlining the basic scope of their duties and gave suggestions how to proceed. Each chairmen will have their plans laid down by the next joint meeting to be held March 11, then Tom and Liz Wise will be ready to commence preparing the flyer and advertising the event.

  5. Membership- Larry displayed a letter that he and Steven Schnell, Membership Coordinator, composed and was directed to potential new members that belong to SDC in outlying areas, urging them to join us in our joint automotive interest and Studebaker comraderie. After slight revisions, the letter will be sent to all potential new members and old members who haven’t renewed or have dropped out. Larry also stated that Steven is overwhelmed with his college activities and cannot serve as a telephone communicator, notifying members of coming activities. Charlie agreed to serve in this capacity. John Erb related a story about how an old acquaintance called him recently and related that John had rebuilt a carb for him 40 years ago when they both lived in PA. His name is Larry Craco and he recently moved to Reno and still owns the same Avanti R2 he had back then. He is interested in our club and John will invite him to our next meeting.

  6. Alternate meeting places- President Schnell referenced previous suggestions that we have general membership meetings at various members homes during summer (tour) months, such as “backyard BBQ” and pot luck meetings, etc. However, because of our commitment to encourage club growth, he feels we should stick to our regular schedule as to the 3rd Tuesday of each month at our designated location (currently Round Table Pizza, North Carson location). We can have additional (unofficial in terms of business) get togethers for BBQs, ice cream socials, etc. Gary can enter newly planned schedules on our web site and Charlie can follow up with individual phone contacts. Along these lines, Larry related that his previous SDC Chapter in OR had an annual crab feed that initially started as a Board of Directors function and gradually evolved to include the general membership and their guests. Crab was bought by the case load and cost the club treasury a small fortune. Such events should be gauged by dues paid and be limited to members only. Ralph announced that a former member, Dale Cheney, will be enticed to rejoin, after buying another Studebaker, and that Dale would like to host an “extra curricular” meeting at his home later this spring or early summer. It will probably be a pot luck or a BBQ dinner, depending on the club preference. Extra curricular activities, such as these, should be suggested to Pete Kronenberg who can include them as special interest tour events.

New Business

  1. Newsletter- Larry congratulated our Editor, Ralph Capurro, on his progress with the newsletter and kudos were given by those present, with the caveat that he should prepare the newsletter a little earlier to get them to members prior to the monthly meeting (Ed. Note- I’M TRYING, REALLY I AM!). Gary also is preparing to publish the newsletter on the club website which will not cost anything. Ultimately, it is the plan of Ralph and Gary to publish the newsletter on the website as the primary vehicle, and send paper copies to those members who are not computer saavy. Larry asked how much we spend on postage, and Gary, in sending out an invitation to our club, spent $43.74. Carol Van Dyke suggested we purchase the USPS “forever stamps” at the cost of 41 cent rate before the next rate increase comes into effect to save money. Gary will look into the cost savings. Bud asked if it was necessary to ready the minutes, normally published in the monthly newsletter, at each meeting. Larry said he thought it was important but realized it took time. After a short discussion, he decided we would play it by ear depending on how full the meeting agenda was and size of the turnout. If we have a full slate of business, the secretary will be instructed to give an abbreviated version.

  2. National Auto Museum: Ralph reminded the group that the next adopt a car clean up will be on February 21, next Thursday and every member and his/her guest are allowed in for free. After attending to the 1924 Studebaker Big 6 that the Sagebrush chapter has adopted, we are free to wander the halls.

  3. HAN- Ralph reported to the members that the HAN management had a problem with the swap meet organization and the coordinator, John Sweeney, publisher of the Cruisin News (from which many of our ads come from) will no longer oversee it. Instead, the management is going to put the event out to bid. There may be some concern that the old time vendors who have been with John for many years, may not wish to participate if the new manager isn’t willing to work with them, or changes the concept of the event too much. This could possibly result in not having a HAN swap meet at all this year.

  4. Silver Auction car push during HAN- Discussion also centered on the annual Silver Car Auction and whether or not the “Rite of Passage” (ROP) kids would be available to help again, and the old question of whether to continue the event came up again. Larry reminded everyone we had taken an informal vote 6-8 months ago to continue it. There was some concern that the ROP kids might not be depended on in the event of a management change or a possible lock-down, etc. John Erb will check with the ROP staff and report back at the March meeting. It was felt its better to clear it up now and make arrangements rather than waiting until July. Art Van Dyke suggested another possibility if the ROP wasn’t available. There is an effort underway in Carson City to develop a kids soccer league with several playing fields, however fund raising is difficult and it might be possible to have the older kids on the various teams help us push cars at the auction as a fund-raiser for this cause. No action was taken and the matter will continue in March.

  5. Club Project/Funds expenditure- As a follow up to President Schnell’s interest in continuing the promotion of Studebaker Mystique, in lieu of supporting the National Skills Competition, he asked if anyone had any new ideas. After considerable discussion, Gary suggested we consider supporting a local school project- such as a multi-student shop project working on or restoring a Studebaker vehicle. Ralph thought we could purchase one of the remaining pickup trucks from Jim Webb at a reasonable cost. Pickups seem to appeal to younger kids than say a 4 door sedan and would be more interesting. This would be a big brother-mentor project and be more in line with our club goals of promoting the Studebaker mystique to a younger generation. Gary will investigate this with the Yerington High School shop teacher. Carol Case, Ralph Capurro, Pete Kronenberg and Gary Crabtree were appointed to serve on an organizational committee.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM. Please forward any additions or corrections to the minutes to Charlie Case at (775) 882-5332. Respectfully submitted, C. Case
