HAPPY “KISS YOUR HONEY” DAY

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PRESIDENTIAL NOTES PRIOR TO THE NEXT MEETING AND BRING YOUR IDEAS AND COMMENT

PRESIDENTIAL NOTES

Next time you’re desperate for entertainment, you might check out this website on your computer: www.studebakermotorcompany.com. Seems to be a start up company wanting to revive our favorite marque. They want to build the best vehicle on the road, so they say, and call it a Studebaker. If you click on “showroom”, you can actually see the artist’s renderings of what they might envision the new Hawks, Larks and Presidents will look like. It’s too early to be an April Fool’s joke, and it looks like someone has taken considerable time and effort to create the website. So what’s really going on here? I’ve heard they are looking for investors. Sounds like an uphill battle to me. Nevertheless, I’m keeping my wallet guarded, just so I don’t give in at a weak moment.

I’m pretty sure that January and February are not my favorite months. Just looking out the window one can sense the chill without even stepping foot out there. Tours, parades, Hot August Nights, zone meets and the like seem so far in the future it’s sometimes hard to get motivated when we’re only in February. And the days are just too short! Darkness around 5 PM can also be less than motivating. Guess I must think that when the sun goes down, the day is almost over. Too often it seems I don’t get much done after that. But as I ponder what I write, however, I realize there’s probably a serious leak in my attitude. After all, once it gets to be summer, there might not be enough hours in the day to take care of everything, especially car related matters. So please excuse me now, as I’m going to head out to the garage for some serious wrenching. Here’s hoping that everyone gets their Studebakers running in 2008! See you soon!

News from your Editor Cappy

First, I don’t know how many of us members went to Turlock for one of the first swap meets of the year I saw John Erb and I understand Jay Hubbard also made it. It was sure fun and we escaped the rain until Sunday morning around 11 AM which was about the time we left anyway. There are other swap meets listed in the events listing so maybe we will see you buying up parts for your next project!

Second, the Prez Notes above talked about, in part, tours and how it seemed too early to be thinking about them. I respectfully disagree and suggest this is the best time to be thinking of these events. In fact, I would suggest you put your “thinking caps” on where a nice tour would go to and contact our VP/Tourmaster, Pete and give him your ideas! I would like to see at least 3 tours throughout the summer months.

Third, I have had one person who would like to invite the club over to his house for a show and tell and possible pot luck meal. This event will be later in the spring and will be listed in future editions of this newsletter. If other members would like to contribute their houses to sponsor a tour/show and tell/pot luck during the tour months of May through September, then let Prez Schnell know!

Fourth, as discussed at previous meetings, it is the wish of the members to participate in parades as a way to show off our cars. I understand that there will be a “Honor the War Veterans” parade and car show here in Carson City in May. As I get additional information, I will let the members know how to sign up.

Fifth, last year the club contributed some funds to a youth group to send 2 members back to their National meet and participate in car diagnosis competition. Last meeting, the Prez shared his thoughts that it might be nice to contribute to a cause again this year. I concur and would like to make a suggestion that all members think about how they would like to spend the club’s monies and bring these ideas to our next meeting.

Sixth, on a related note, I have enclosed an article in this newsletter regarding high school auto shop students and one teacher’s attempt to encourage them to work with older cars. Perhaps this is how we as an auto related group could help- if we found a high school or college shop that was interested in promoting such a program, maybe our club could contribute needed parts or tools to encourage them in this endeavor. Just a thought! Again, bring your thoughts/ideas to the next meeting.

Seventh, next year’s SW Zone Meet will be in Milpitas (Sequoia Chapter) followed in 2009 in Sacramento area (Karel Staple Chapter) so I hope most of our members will be able to attend these. More information as it comes to us regarding dates and interest in caravaning.

Last, Happy (but also safe) motoring during these cold and sometimes slippery weather. We need you to participate in all the tours and events we have planned for the Sagebrush members. See you there!

SECRETARY NOTES:

Meeting of January 15, 2008@ Roundtable Pizza-Carson

Members present: President Schnell and Mary, Cases and family, Art and Carol Van Dykes, John and Sandy Erb, Louise Young, Pat Hansen, Pete Kronenberg, Jay and Tina Hubbard, Terry Ressler, Ralph Capurro.

The January, 2008 meeting of the Sagebrush Studebaker Chapter (SDC) began promptly at 7pm at the Round Table Pizza-North Carson City. The meeting was called to order by President Larry Schnell. He introduced the current board of directors as follows: Larry Schnell, President; Pete Kronenberg, Vice-President/Tourmaster; Charlie Case, Secretary; Gary Crabtree, Treasurer.

Secretary’s report: The reading of the November, 2007 meeting (there was no December, 2007 meeting due to Christmas dinner) was read by former Secretary Terry Ressler. No additions or correrctions were noted.

Treasurer’s report: Report was given by Gary Crabtree as follows: Checking account $104.22, Savings $9,215.38. Income was $96.00 in dues, $0.06 interest on checking, $2.70 interest on savings. Christmas dinner income was $286.55 with $540.55 paid out to Carson Station Grill in payment for dinner. Gary reported that the books balanced.

Old Business:

  1. John Erb was asked if the EAA had contributed a donation to the “Rite of Passage” (ROP), the youth group that helped us at the car push at Hot August Nights (HAN), Silver Auction. John replied the item was discussed at their last meeting and that it should happen, but wasn’t paid yet.

  2. President Schnell announced there were 2 positions that needed to be filled: that of Newsletter Editor and Membership Coordinator. He informed us that Ralph Capurro agreed to continue as the editor. Discussion then centered on the duties of the membership coordinator. Some suggestions were given as recritment and retention of members, promoting and advertising the existence of the club, notifying members of meetings and tours, etc. John Erb informed the group about the success of the Karel Staple Chapter SDC efforts to increase their membership in the Sacramento, CA area, by vigorously advertising and promoting the club to approximately 50 members at the present time. Ralph Capurro informed the group there were 55 SDC members listed in the national roster in the State of Nevada and 11 members in Eastern CA, primarily in the Bishop and Portola areas. Larry asked for a volunteer to fill this office; after hearing no takers, Larry recommended appointing his son Steven Schnell, a UNR student and current member to assume the job. John Erb seconded the recommendation and asked that he be given an open hand to develop the furtherance of the Sagebrush Chapter.

  3. Announcement- Announcement that our good friend Lloyd Prather, National Zone Director for the SW Zone has suffered a stroke recently. The secretary will send a “get-well” card from the Chapter.

  4. Christmas Party Recap: It was agreed there was general satisfaction with Carson Station location. It was a spacious accommodations, and the food and service was excellent. Larry recommended we reserve the room again in Dec, 2008 as soon as possible. The participation was down from last year, possibly due to our recently changed eligibility requirements and the fact that only paid up members were called. A recommendation was also made to send a thank you card to Ms. Amy Moss, Larry and Mary Schnell’s daughter, who entertained the dinner guests with a variety of magical card tricks in a very professional manner and was a real crowd pleaser. Secretary asked to send a thank you card to Ms. Moss with address to be supplied by President to secretary.

  5. Sparks Christmas Parde: The Sparks Christmas parade was a success with 7 Studebakers participating including 2 “top-down” convertibles. Many favorable comments and gestures were received by the crowd along the route. The parade was followed by a “bean and meat” feed hosted by Tom and Liz Wise at their home in Sparks. The group would like to participate in the parade again next year and expresses their thanks to Tom and Liz for inviting us.

  6. Special Awards: President Schnell and John Erb were both given a round of applause for having recently received their 40 year pins for continuous SDC membership.

  7. Orphan Car Show- Pres Schnell asked for progress report for the orphan meet. Chairman Bud Domas was not present due to work obligations, but Co-Chairman Charlie Case was asked for a review. Considerable discussion ensued and recommendations were made by the president and the group as a whole. One item misunderstood by the group was the elimination of modified and late model cars at the meet. Bud wanted it clarify this (through Charlie) that only “qualified orphan cars” that were modified, would be eligible to compete for an award. No entry fee will be charged for the display only class. THIS CHANGE WILL HAVE TO BE NOTED IN THE PRE-ADVERTISING AND AT THE GATE, EXPLAINING THE GUIDELINES and will be worked on by Tom and Liz Wise, the advertising chairpersons. Financing: The Sagebrush chapter will underwrite the cost of the meet as a major club function, although an entry fee may be charged for cars entering competition to offset this cost. Judging: The following items were discussed and voted on by the members present (12-0): a) there will be a display class only, no awards; b) no trophies will be awarded to Sagebrush members UNLESS their car is the only one in its class; c) Sagebrush members will not participate in judging, but will be eligible to enter (and thus potentially win an award) their cars; d) Larry will be the Chief Judge and will determine the style of judging as to whether it is strictly people’s choice or otherwise; e) Listing of all appointed chairpersons include: Registration- Gary Crabtree; Field Arrangements and car placement- Art Van Dyke; Judging-Larry Schnell; Food- Ralph Capurro; Raffle and Poker Walk- Peter Kronenberg; Advertising and Signs- Tom and Elizabeth Wise; Trophies/awards and dash plaques- Terry Ressler; f) Ralph Capurro, Luncheon chairman suggested the club do the lunch rather than have it catered. Discussion followed and it was suggested we just purchase tri-tip steak (or similar) and cook it at the site and put it on a Kaiser roll or similar. Other items would include condiments, chips, fruit and drinks. The price of the lunch will be determined, whether it is to be included in entrance fee and amount charged for “display only”, no entrance fee cars; g) Dash plaques will be provided with motion made by VP Kronenberg and passed. Terry Ressler will design and purchase up to 40 of them. Wood wall plaques will be used for the trophies with a dash plaque affixed with separate brass plate announcing the class and placement (e.g. 1st place, 1930-1939, etc.)

New Business

  1. Pete Kronenberg recommended we reserve the Carson Station Grill, location of last year’s Christmas Party, at this time to get our preferred date of Tuesday, December 9, 2008. This date will be requested with an alternate date if our preferred is not available. Larry asked Pete to follow through with the restaurant staff.

  2. National Auto Museum: Gary inquired if we wer going to continue the “adopt a car” program which costs $100 per year. Jay Hubbard said the club hasn’t attended to the 1924 Studebaker Big 6 as much as we could or should. Ralph suggested we send in monies to continue adoption of the car and Gary said he would check to find out the status of our donation to the musuem and report next meeting. Charlie stated he thought it was a matter of poor communication as to the dates, and recommended the new membership chairman (Steven Schnell) should serve as the telephone communicator, calling members prior to all club events. Ralph will follow through with dates and publish them in the “Coming Events” section of the newsletter.

  3. SDC Membership List: Larry asked who is responsible for notifying the National Club of who our current officers are. Tom Young previously handled this. Gary said he would notify SDC and include the new editor and membership coordinator as well.

  4. Jim Webb’s eligibility for membership longevity pin: Charlie asked if Jim could qualify for a 20 or 30 year pin award. The group wasn’t sure if Jim had maintained continuous membership or if he had a break in service. Larry said he would investigate the matter. Jay made a motion that the Sagebrush chapter pay Jim’s National dues as a token of our respect. Seconded by Gary and motion is pending the President’s research.

  5. National Skills USA: Larry reiterated our support and payment of $500 each for 2 youth to attend the convention last year in Kansas City. He feels this was a good will gesture BUT WOULD LIKE TO SEE US DO SOMETHING THAT WOULD BETTER ADVERTISE AND PROMOTE THE STUDEBAKER MYSTIQUE. No action was taken.

  6. Possible Highway Cleanup campaign: Discussion centered on ways to promote the club and question was raised about our past efforts in this regard. Our former area and sign was removed during the construction of the new freeway. Also, many of the members are getting older and the effort may not be worth the advertising value of the State sign. Some members felt that some members and potential members may have abandoned the club because of a too great an emphasis placed on the cleanup events. Other avenues of exposure were discussed and members felt parades would be most productive (i.e. Nevada Day, Reno Rodeo, Bridgeport Days, etc). Free advertising of coming events in the local newspaper for various clubs is also available. Pete will look into the dates of these events and report back. Ralph asked if their was a list of tours available for publication in the newsletter and Pete answered “not yet”, but that any event will be communicated to the editor so it may be published in the newsletter.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM. Please forward any additions or corrections to the minutes to Charlie Case at (775) 882-5332. Respectfully submitted, C. Case

Laughs (presented by Jay Hubbard!

This is how the stock market works.

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each. The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their efforts. He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminshed even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it. The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50, however, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers, “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each!” The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys. THEN THEY NEVER SAW THE MAN NOR HIS ASSISTANT, only monkeys everywhere! Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works!

Anyone who has worked on British cars with Lucas electrics can relate to these quips!

The Lucas Electric motto: “Get Home Before Dark”

Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim “sudden, unexpected darkness”.

Lucas- inventor of the first intermittent wiper

Lucas- inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The 3 position Lucas switch- DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other 3 switch settings: Smoke, Smolder and Ignite!

The original anti-theft device- Lucas Electric Products

I’ve had a Lucas pacemaker for months and have never experienced any prob......”

If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either!

It’s not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm’s Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met with too much resistance!

Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.

Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner, “How do you tell 1 switch from another at night, since they all look the same?” The owner replied, “It doesn’t matter which one you use, nothing happens!”

Back in the 1970’s, Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn’t suck.

QA phoned and advised Engineering that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So the Engineer made the wires longer.

Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators!

Bell invented the phone, Edison invented the light bulb and Lucas invented the short circuit

Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: Check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk 3 times sunwise around your car chanting: “Oh, mighty Prince of Darkness, protect your unworthy servant”.
