SECRETARY NOTES:

SAGEBRUSH STUDEBAKER SDC

Minutes of the September 15, 2009 meeting

The general membership meeting opened at 7 P.M. Sixteen members present as follows: Pete Kronenberg, Gary Crabtree, Charlie and Carol Case, Larry and Mary Schnell, John and Sandy Erb, Art and Carol Van Dyke, Julie and Chris Fleischman, Louise young and Pat Hansen, and Terry Ressler.

Secretary's Report: Charlie read the minutes of the August meeting. Larry wished to make the following addition/correction to them. The Studebaker building that he and Mary visited in South Bend, Indiana was the old engineering building instead of the foundry, and Lionel Stone's tragic accident occurred enroute to the International Meet rather than returning from the meet.

Terry Ressler asked how much the club paid to the ROP boys for helping push at the HAN Silver Auction. The amount was $400.00. Mary thought the amount was a little high. Gary said the amount was split between the Sagebrush Chapter and the EAA association.

Treasurer's Report: Gary reported the books are in balance.. We had an increase in the treasury of $24.61 and expenses of $356.85 a decrease of $332.24. Income was $9.50 from the raffle, interest $61.45; Expenses food purchase and delivery $239.15 and $70.25, $27.45 = $336.85 attributed to the HAN "push".

Old Business: Pete discussed the three options he investigated for the Christmas dinner party. The location and available dates follow:

Carson Valley Inn Tuesday December 8 Minden $27 - $30 member

Tamarack Tuesday December 8 Reno $700.00 total

Gold Dust West Thursday Dec. 10 Carson $14 member

Costs based on 30 members plus tax and tip.

Other venues were discussed including Sharkey's in Gardnerville, the Carson Nugget, and John Ascuaga's Nugget, Tuesday December 8th was selected as the most favorable date. A hand vote resulted in Tamarack 1 vote, Gold Dust West 0 and CVI 1 vote. It was decided to call the Sparks Nugget and if December 8th is available and the cost was not too expensive we will go there, if not Pete will choose one of the three other locations.

New Business: Gary reminded everyone the Smith Valley Fun Day Tour will be the first Sunday in October.

Julie has received 8 RSVP's reservations for the work/BBQ meeting on September 19th. Call her at 267-1332 if you plan to attend.

John made motion to adjourn at 8 P.M. seconded by Terry,

Submitted,

Charlie Case, Secretary

SAGEBRUSH CHAPTER SDC

Minutes of the October 20, 2009 Meeting

The October meeting opened at 7:00 p.m. by President Kronenberg. Twenty members were present, including: Tom & Liz Wise, Gary Crabtree, Charlie & Carol Case, Jim Sloan, Larry and Mary Schnell, John & Sandy Erb, Larry Crapo, Art & Carol Van Dyke, Pat Hansen, Louise Young, Steve, Julie and Chris Fleischman, and Ken Wright.

Secretary's Report: Charlie read the September minutes with no corrections or additions noted. The minutes stand as read.

Treasurers Report: Gary reported the raffle brought in $11.00, dividends .49 & .20,  Gary will cut a check for the EAA divided equally between the two clubs. John Erb asked when the EAA would get their share and Gary said he didn't have a name or address to send it to, but he could make a check out to the EAA and give it to John for delivery to his group. The Treasurers report was approved as read.

Old Business: Pete was concerned whether or not our reservation for Fuji Park (Orphan Car Meet) has been approved by the City Parks Dept. yet. Ralph Capurro was in charge of contacting the City but wasn't present at the meeting. Pete will try to contact him by phone.

John Erb failed to show up for the Fleischman work party and wanted to know if everyone had fun . He provided small grinders to remove the paint from the firetruck and said he wanted them back - - seriously, he expressed interest in how the work went. Julie said "well you missed a good BBQ!" Everyone got along well and worked hard leaving a bright shiny truck. Art Van Dyke talked to the shop foreman at Les Schwab tires about the best way to work on the fire trucks "split rim wheels", whether to demount the tires first or sandblast them with the tires on. The foreman said to have Chris bring them in and they would demount the tires and remount them, free of charge, after the wheels are sandblasted and painted. Chris was very happy and Julie thanked Art for making the inquiry.

New Business: Pete contacted the Sparks Nugget regarding the possibility of hosting the 2009 Christmas party there. The December 8th date was available so Pete had Gary send a $200 deposit to reserve it. Considerable discussion ensued concerning menu and prices. They ranged from a Butcher Block prime rib sandwich for $13.50 to a combo plate at $43.95. Larry Schnell asked if the prices included tax and gratuity and if there was another choice offered beside red meat. Pete wasn't sure about the former but Liz Wise thought the gratuity was included in the prices quoted. A chicken dinner is available at $26.95. Other questions asked were how large is the private room, how many people will it hold, is the buffet available at a decent price. Pete quoted 25-30 members in attendance. He will contact the Nugget representative and get additional information. A hand count resulted in 7 people choosing a meat dinner, 3 wanting chicken and 2 favoring fish.

Terry Ressler announced the In-Liners Club was hosting its annual fall tour on October 24. They will meet at the Douglas County High School parking lot at 9 a.m. and depart on Hwy 88 to Markleeville thence over Monitor Summit to Walker where they will have a BBQ lunch. Larry Schnell was very excited and wanted to know if a V-8 would be allowed with the In-Liners. Terry said the whole club is welcome regardless of the type of engine, but bring your Studebaker. Larry said he was coming but Mary was lukewarm - he said Mary wants to go to Yosemite instead. Larry may have to satisfy both desires.

Larry Crapo said he got his Avanti frame and chasis attachments (72 pieces) back from the powder coater. The shop owner, a retired older gentleman sandblasted everything and powder coated (paint) the parts for $275.00 The Powderman is located in Sparks near Baldini's, the phone number is 359-2840.

Charlie Case received a phone call from his second cousin in Churchville, VA, informing him an older female customer has many Studebaker parts, trucks and cars for sale. Including a very clean, well maintained R2 Hawk. Her grandfather owned a farm in the nearby vicinity and used Studebaker vehicles exclusively.

Meeting adjourned via a motion made by Larry Crapo and seconded by Pete at 8 p.m.

What IS Studebaker up to?

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2006/12/12/what-is-studebaker-up-to/

Studebaker had a nice ad for the 1947 "Starlite". This week, they were pushing "the craftsmanship you can trust in every postwar Studebaker." The ad showed a father and son team working together on a crankshaft. They were Stanley Lipowski and his son Stanley Jr. The point of the ad was that Studebaker had a lot of experience and the cars were made by family men who could be trusted to make a good car, "home owning, home-loving friendly townspeople." Presumably this was in contrast to the unionized dregs-of-society who made all the other cars...

Laughs for the sage.

From Jay Hubbard:

My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year.

Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call, that she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting. Seems she was forced to make an emergency landing because of bad weather. Thank God the kids weren't with her.

The FAA issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: She was flying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument flight rating) conditions while only having obtained a VFR (visual flight rating) rating.

The absence of a post-crash fire was likely due to insufficient fuel on board. No one on the ground was injured.

The photograph below was taken at the scene to show the extent of damage to her aircraft.

She was really lucky.
