See if you can answer this riddle?

A guy went into a bar and ask for a beer. The bar tender ask how old he was and the guy said he was 16 and the bar tender went on to serve him. How is this possible?

SECRETARY NOTES:

SAGEBRUSH CHAPTER SDC

Minutes of July 21, 2009 Meeting

The meeting opened at 7 p.m. with ten members present: Pete Kronenberg, Gary Crabtree, Charlie Case, Larry & Mary Schnell, Larry Crapo, John and Sandy Erb, Pat Hansen and Louise Young.

Secretary's Report: Charlie read the minutes of the June meeting with one amendment; Pete announced T&H Paint was under new management and their new policy will not allow donations for any events in the future. Pete Kronenberg announced T&H Paint was under new management and their new policy will not allow donations for any events in the future. Pete bought two Maguires Deluxe Polishing Kits for the Orphan Car Meet from WalMart.

Treasurer's Report: Income for the month amounted to $146.13, broke down as $68.50 from the Orphan meet, dues $12.00, deposit dividends .37 checking, $13.44 CD. Expenses were $76.41 for club BBQ, $95.00 permit fee for Fuji Park, Truckee Parade $50.00. Orphan car show income was $484.50 and expenses were $330.00 for a net loss of $154.50. A complete break down will be given at the August meeting. Gary reported the books were in balance.

Tourmaster Report: Larry Crapo hosted an impromptu BBQ at his home following the Truckee 4th of July parade. Eight or nine people attended. Our group won a third place trophy. Some contention followed the announcer's negative comments during our passing in review. Ralph, Larry, Gary and Terry attended.

Ralph reported 31 orphan and late model cars participated in the Orphan Car show this year. One couple responded to an ad placed in the Big Nickel trader magazine. He feels more emphasis needs to be placed on advertising. Drinks were provided by the club and participants brought a picnic lunch. The Carson Cruisers lent their sound system, and tables and chairs were borrowed from Ralph's church. Awards were presented in the following categories; 1900-50 1st place went to a 1949 Crosley, 2nd to a 1950 Packard convertible, 1951-60 1st 1951 Packard Clipper and 2nd to a 1952 Packard model 200, 1961-70 1st was a 1965 Pontiac LeMans, 2nd was a 1964 T-cab Studebaker pick up. 1971-99 1st 1957 Ford Thunderbird, 2nd was a 1961 Ford pickup. Best of Show was a 1965 Pontiac GTO hardtop.

Coming events in the area will be the Fleischmans "sanding party" and BBQ date to be announced. The Hot August Nights car auction will be on August 6-9. Cool September Nights car show will be held on the Labor Day weekend at Lake Tahoe, there is a $75.00 entry fee. October 4th will be the Smith Valley Fun Day car show, tractor pull, flea market, vendor displays, shot gun competition and BBQ.

Gary reported the Yerington Spring Fling car show had four Studebakers attending.

Terry said the Inliners Club car show in Minden had 80 cars present with three Studes attending.

New Business: Gary reported he still needs volunteers for the HAN car push especially on the night shift on Saturday and Sunday. Pete said "we'll have to put an arm" on the EAA to help with the push now that Mary Romain isn't leading their group any longer. Gary said we will be assisted by 12 boys from the Rite of Passage school. Parking for the HAN auction continues to be a problem as well as the Silver staff passes. He only has 10 passes that members will have to share. Gary went on to explain the procedure for lining cars up during the auction. There will be three lines of cars set up - three for cars about to go over the block and and a 4th one for cars out of numerical sequence. Late comers and special assigned times will be put in the 4th line with the lower numbered cars lined up ahead of the higher numbers. Parking passes will have to be received from Gary then returned for re-use by other members. Gary can be reached by calling him on his cell phone at 775-313-2296.

Larry Schnell reported a very sad event occurred while Lionel Stone was returning from the SDC International Meet when he had a blow out on his late model pick up and over corrected causing the truck to roll over. Lionel was severely injured and sadly his wife, Elaine, was killed. The Sagebrush Chapter will send its condolences.

Larry went on to report on the International Meet that he attended in addition to Tom Wise. There was just under 700 registrants and 1,500 participants attending with 300 cars in the concourse half of which were judged. Nearly 500 brand X model cars filled the parking lot showing the interest in the Studebakers marque held by the people living in the midwest. He went on to tell of his visit to the SASCO warehouse in South Bend, where he bought a pickup bed of Studebaker parts 300-400 pounds, only now he's trying to figure out how to get them home. The warehouse is located in the old foundry building which is in very poor condition after years of neglect with a leaking roof and buckling wooden floors. Without electricity it was very dark and flashlights are needed on the upper floors. There are pallets upon pallets of old truck wheel hubs, window glass, and moldy upholstery material. Apparently, Ed Reynolds may be interested in bidding on the lot but will leave them stored in South Bend rather than move the inventory. The building is slated for destruction to make room for a city sponsored industrial park. Overall Larry said he had a fabulous time exploring while Mary rolled her eyes and said "yeah - right!"

International Board Meeting: Meme Helgren is slated to replace Ed Reynolds as head of the International Meet Selection Committee. She is proposing a new method of advertising Regional and local chapter meets on computer chips sent to the various groups in SDC. Larry made a motion to have President Kronenberg send a letter indicating our support and get on the mailing list and will submit our meet information. Motion seconded by Charlie Case. Pete delegated Gary to write a letter to Meme. There was some consternation on the Board after receiving a bid from a small SDC Chapter in Delaware for hosting toe 2014 International Meet. Only about 15 members attend their local meetings out of seventeen total membership. They voted 13 to 4 to host the International Meet.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. motion by Larry Crapo and seconded by Ralph.

Respectfully Submitted,

Charlie Case, Secretary

Larry Crapo won the raffle.

August 19, 2009 Meeting

Sagebrush Chapter SDC

The meeting opened at 7 p.m., those in attendance were Pete Kronenberg, Gary Crabtree, Jim Sloan, Charlie & Carol Case, Art and Carol Van Dyke, Louise Young, Pat Hansen, Chris & Julie Fleischman, John & Sandy Erb and Ralph Capurro.

Secretary's Report: Charlie read the minutes of the June 16 meeting. Art Van Dyke questioned the amount of funds expended on the Orphan Meet, saying "you can't have a gross figure greater than the expenses - having a negative value:. Gary explained the $150.00 loss was just a rough estimate given at the last meeting before all the bills were in. He reported the exact amounts were $637.99 expenses and $602.50 income leaving a net loss of $35.49.

Art also asked what the problem was at the Truckee 4th of July parade, and Carol Van Dyke wanted to know "what the negative comments were". Ralph Capurro said the announcer was very sarcastic, and after a group of Corvettes proceeded us, he remarked "well we're down to Studebakers now". He also made some other disparaging remarks when the microphone was still open. Gary will write a letter to the parade officials protesting the announcers remarks.

Treasurer's Report: Gary reported income was 31.67, raffle was 17 and the rest was dividends. expenses were 15.64 for web domainn name, and 499.53 for the orphan meet.

Tour Report: Ralph Capurro noted the car push was behind us and went fairly smooth giving kudos to Gary for his effort over the entire four days. The RPO had six boys present working one shift each day. Charlie asked if we were going to make a donation to their entertainment fund again this year. After a brief discussion Art made a motion to pay them $400.00 it was seconded by Gary - motion passed 4 to 2.

Ralph said the original HAN swap meet held in Sacramento was very well attended this year while the Reno swap meet was very poor and he doubts whether it will continue next year. The HAN staff brought this about by charging a fee for the organizers of the swap meet making it too expensive to continue as a part of the Hot August Nights events (in effect killing the goose).

September 19 the Cool September Nights event at the Horizon Ceasars Hotel at Lake Tahoe Stateline will be held.

September 19 is also the date for the Fleischman sanding party on Chris' fire truck and or getting it running. There will be a pot luck BBQ with the club providing the meat and drinks. Members are requested to bring a side dish to share. The Fleischmans will provide a map and directions to their home in the next newsletter. Members are asked to RSVP Julie a week in advance.

September 24 will be the National Auto Museum clean up. Our adopted car is the 1926 Studebaker sedan. We haven't participated too much this year and Ralph would like to see a better turn out this time. It only takes about half an hour of our time to clean and admittance to the museum is free.

October 4th is the Smith Valley Fun Days and car show.

Pete asked Ralph to look into reserving Fuji Park for next years Orphan meet, the first part of June was thought to be better to avoid conflict with the Karson Kruisers "Run what ya Brung" show held in early July. The park reservations fill up early. Ralph will not be at our September meeting.

Pete also said we should start thinking about reserving a location for this years Christmas Party dinner and he will look into it.

Miscellaneous: John Erb expounded on ways to encourage younger members to join the Studebaker experience. One way to do this was to expound on the modified/performance aspect of the club, noting that the SDC board welcomes modified Studes and even has a judging class for them at International meets.

John related his experience as a youth when he modified an old Ford coupe - chopping the top and hopping the engine up. It was a little rough but was beautiful in Johns eyes. He related how his father followed him when he moved from New York to Idaho, because his father was worried he might not make it in the old Ford. As it turned out his Fathers car was the one that broke down.

John also announced he began working on his Avanti again, and Sandy said Yeah, he turned it around in his garage".

A motion to close the meeting was made by Gary and seconded by Art. Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Charlie Case, Secretary

What IS Studebaker up to?

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2006/12/12/what-is-studebaker-up-to/

Studebaker had a nice ad for the 1947 "Starlite". This week, they were pushing "the craftsmanship you can trust in every postwar Studebaker." The ad showed a father and son team working together on a crankshaft. They were Stanley Lipowski and his son Stanley Jr. The point of the ad was that Studebaker had a lot of experience and the cars were made by family men who could be trusted to make a good car, "home owning, home-loving friendly townspeople." Presumably this was in contrast to the unionized dregs-of-society who made all the other cars...
