PRESIDENTIAL NOTES

A note from your V. P.:

I just wanted to mention what a great time those, of us had, at the parade in Truckee. I was reminded because, I finally got, the pictures back, last week, of the parade, on the 4th of July.

We are all lined up, in one assigned spot waiting, for the parade, to start.

The three car's that came, this year, were a good representation, of three, of the six decades, of car's built, by Studebaker.

Hope, to see you, in the pictures, of the next year's parade.

Tips from your Club

You'll need to go easy on your car with the ring gear spacer you've made (.265”) though. Here's why:

Such spacers were common devices marketed during the 1960s to do exactly what you have done. (Putting in a Twin Traction unit from a 3.31:1 differential in a car with a 4.09:1 ratio rear axle. The 4.09:1 gearset would not fit in the 3.31:1 differential carrier.) They were made for all popular differentials of the day, for applications where there was more than one differential case offset position. I installed one of them for a 4.09:1 ring and pinion on a 3 series case in my 1963 Super Lark's differential in 1968. I promptly sheared off all the ring gear bolts and broke 5 teeth on my brand new gearset. The problem is this: Such spacers move the ring gear off the register fit on the case. The register for locating the ring gear's inside diameter is only about .250” high. Beyond .250” as when a spacer thicker than .250” is used, the only thing locating the ring gear on the differential case are the bolts going through the loose spacer. Because there is a spacer between the ring gear and the case, the bolts are holding the ring gear with direct shear force. This is an invitation for certain failure.

The performance aftermarket industry recognized this . To avoid the spacer problem, they simply replaced ring gear spacers with thicker ring gears to fit the register for those applications. Companies like Richmond Gear and others market numerous 4.09 and up ratios for Dana 44 axles due to its popularity on 4X4 vehicles.

Ring gear spacers can still be found on e-bay, but I would not recommend ever using one on any Dana 44, Dana 60, General Motors 10 or 12 bolt differential. Instead, use the correct 3.92 and up case or use a special, thicker ring gear gearset with a 3.73:1 and down case. Gary

SECRETARY NOTES:

SAGEBRUSH STUDEBAKER CHAPTER SDC

Minutes of the July 15, 2008 Meeting

Vice President Pete Kronenberg opened the general membership meeting at 7 P.M. at the Round Table Pizza Parlor in Carson City. Twelve members were present, including: Pete, Larry Craco, John and Sandy Erb, Jim Sloan, Gary Crabtree, Art and Carol Van Dyke, Pat Hansen, Louise Young, Charlie and Carol Case. President Larry Schnell was in Oregon on business.

Secretary's Report: The minutes were read and discussion ensued as follows; a question was asked if we had received any reply from Jim Bell (Orphan meet entrant #1) following the Secretary's letter of explanation regarding our judging procedure. Gary said he received an e-mail from him stating he was not spewing "sour grapes", but just expressing his feelings and constructive criticism. Larry Craco inquired if his recommendation regarding publishing the newsletter on the club web site had been acted upon. Gary said it will be sent to all members who have computers, but a newsletter hasn't been written for the last two months. Secretary Case was instructed to contact the Carson City Parks Department and make a reservation to use Fuji Park for the 2009 orphan show.

Treasurer's Report: Gary handed out a breakdown on the orphan meet expenses, as requested by President Schnell. The net loss was slightly less than had previously thought resulting in a net loss of $387.84. The June activity showed $895 deposited with expenses of $644.

Old Business: Vice President Kronenberg gave a report on the Truckee tour/parade on the 4th of July. Three cars participated, comprised of Pete's '66, Larry's Avanti, Charlie's '40, and Ralph's also ran that couldn't start. The parade had many floats, bands and marchers with a great spectator turnout and participation. Pete needs to be reimbursed for the $50 entry fee. Our group won a second place award in the "old car entry" and Pete displayed the plaque. It was thought a black Pontiac GTO convertible must have taken 1st, but was unconfirmed.

Carol Case suggested we try and make the Virginia City 4th of July Parade next year and plan on staying all day - have a BBQ and watch the fireworks that night.

Larry Craco mentioned the Reno T-Bird Club participated in the Veterans Day Parade in that city.

HAN Auction: Gary Crabtree distributed a "car auction push schedule" for Sagebrush members for the dates of August 7th through the 10th. He made arrangements with Silver Auction staff for ten (10) parking permits; however, we may have to park outside then get a pass from Gary and then park inside the assigned area. We will not be given HAN T-shirts this year, instead they are going to use "vests" It is recommended members wear previous years shirts and/or HAN passes around your neck to help identify yourself as one of the pushers. Gary will also speak to the security guards and tell them to expect the Sagebrush and EAA members. Everyone is to use the north entrance. Art made a suggestion that we check on having the local El Polo Loco restaurant cater part or all of our lunch/dinner menu. Gary will make contact with Ralph Capurro in this regard.

August BBQ Tour: Carol Van Dyke announced the "after push BBQ" will be held at her and Arts home at 56 Heaven Hill Way in Carson City on August 16 beginning at 2:30 p.m. Meat and drinks will be provided, everyone is to bring a side dish to share. Directions to their house follows: take US 395 from Reno, depart the freeway at the first exit (alt 395 business route - Carson Street), turn left at the first traffic signal on Arrowhead Drive, go through the 2nd roundabout making a left immediately onto Imus Road, continue straight to end of the paved road at the top of the hill, turn right on Heaven Hill Way (paved street) go to end of Heaven Hill and turn left - continue to the large "log cabin" home and your there. Arthur demands that all members and guests drive their Studebakers.

Show and Tell: Charlie Case gave a brief talk on the advancement of automobile dealership advertising logos mounted on the back of new cars. In the 30's & 40"s most of these "dealer name plates" were made from cast-pot metal, usually in script form and were chrome plated. Even earlier, dealers names were hand painted or silk screened onto spare tire covers. Charlie remembers the Pozzi Motors Ford dealer in Carson City displayed a bouguet of posie flowers with the dealers name spelled out in a curve above the posie basket. Compare these innovation designs with todays "decals and plastic license plate frames". He then went on to show a recent acquisition given to him by a parts dealer. It was a cast name plate displaying the dealer name in large diagonal capital letters "SONOMA MOTORS" attached above a bar with reverse slanting, smaller caps spelling out WINNEMUCCA, NEVADA in the center, and medium cap letter slanting letters below the bar reading STUDEBAKER. The casting is fairly heavy for its size, was chrome plated and attached by two metal screws at the ends of the bar. (see drawing) The next "Show N Tell" will be presented by Herr Schnell.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Charlie Case, Secretary

SAGEBRUSH STUDEBAKER SDC

Minutes of the August 19, 2008 Meeting

The August meeting was opened at 7 P.M. by Vice President Pete Kronenberg due to President Schnell's illness. Eight members were in attendance; including John and Sandy Erb, Charlie and Carol Case, Carol Van Dyke, Gary Crabtree and Pete Kronenberg.

Secretary's Report: Was read and corrections or additions were reported.

Treasurers Report: Last month's income was $11.00 from the 50/50 raffle, $53.00 refund deposit on Fuji Park clean up fee,

Old Business: Discussion centered on how the HAN Silver Auction "car push" turned out. The general feeling was that we had sufficient help between SDC-EAA members, the ROP, and USMC pushers all helping. The distribution of and use of our manpower needs improving, however with closer supervision. Charlie suggested two team leaders should be appointed with a (name tag) "Team Leader" worn to identify each individual to other pushers and to Silver Auction Staff to improve communications. One team (1 to 3) members to push cars to the auction block and (3-5) members minimum to line cars up three abreast from the staging area. Pete suggested the floor area and workers could be color coded to help define areas of responsibility. Gary also needs a sufficient number of drivers to bring assigned vehicles to the staging area.

New Business: Ralph Capurro announced he submitted his resignation as New Letter Editor of the "Studebaker Sage" to President Schnell due to his busy schedule and personal commitments. After a short discussion Gary volunteered to write the newsletter if other members would help send him information, stories, or other items of interest.

Ralph Capurro made a motion to allow $50.00 to purchase a floral bouquet for Larry Schnell during his hospitalization stay. John Erb 2nd motion passed.

Tour Chairman: Pete announced he would be on vacation during the September/October tour schedule and asked Charlie to come up with a September tour. Gary initially offered to host a pot-luck dinner at his home but subsequently had to withdraw his offer. Charlie will try to schedule an alternate tour and will send a post card announcement to members.

The October tour will be led by Charlie to the 17th Annual Country Cruise on October 5th in Dressler Park, Wellington, Nevada. Members are to meet at the Round Table parking lot (WalMart Shopping Center) at College Parkway Drive and US 395 in Carson City and leave promptly at 9 A.M.. See the web site for registration form.

Orphan Car Meet: Pete asked if a reservation had been made for the 2009 Orphan Meet at Fuji Park yet. Gary said the reservation has been confirmed for July 12, 2009, and the Carson City Parks Department will forward the contract/agreement to Louise Young approximately three weeks before the scheduled event. John Erb opened a discussion on having a "open year" orphan meet called "Orphan Plus" but no action was taken.

Club Members Project Report: Terry Ressler has been busy installing a "Chevy" 292 6 cyl. engine in his Lark Station wagon hoping to make it go faster than the little 6 cyl flat head can.

Ralph Capurro had the carburator rebuilt on his 66 Cruiser but still has a few bugs to work out to make it more dependable. His Avanti is still on the lift waiting further attention.

Gary Crabtree finally has his engine back after being rebuilt and installed in his R series 1 1/2 ton truck. He's looking forward to having it painted now.

Bud Domas 55 Commander is making progress too with the front suspension being rebuilt then the restored engine is to be reinstalled.

Art Van Dyke's Golden Hawk swalled a feather in its carburator and had to have it rebuilt, then his '29 Cabriolet's generator died and is awaiting resurrection.

Larry Schnell has his '60 Hawk coupe ready for paint after having it walnut shell blasted but will have to wait until Larry recovers from surgery.

Tom Wise has his '47 Plybaker Coupe almost finished after having it rear ended by an uninsured amigo about a year ago.

The meeting adjourned at 8 P.M.

Respectfully Submitted

Laughs (presented by Jay Hubbard!)

Who’s your best friend! If you don’t believe it, just try this experiment. Put your dog and your wife in the trunk of your Studebaker for an hour. When you open the trunk, who is really happy to see you! (Ed. Note- Maybe the Studebaker- because that is where you will be sleeping!)

Laughs for the sage.

I was a rookie California Highway patrolman in 1967, assigned to Norwalk in Los Angeles County. The San Gabriel Freeway had just been opened and traffic was really flying.

I clocked a motorist at 87 miles per hour in an old Studebaker Lark. The gentleman was very polite and readily admitted he was speeding. To reward him for his honesty, I told him I was only going to write him a ticket for 75 in a 65 zone. Had I ticketed him for 85, a court appearance would have been mandatory resulting in a probable two days in jail. The man strenuously objected to the reduced speeding ticket.

You told me you clocked me at 87 MPH and that is what you have to write the ticket for,’ he said.

He explained that the guys he worked with told him his Studebaker would not go 86 MPH and he was going to prove them wrong. He wanted a speeding ticket to prove he was going 85 or better. I obliged him with a ticket for 87 MPH and he left happy as a clam.”
