PRESIDENTIAL NOTES
Hi from your Pres:
I have talked to Gary and the details of the July 4th parade in Truckee are finalized. We are waiting for the
parade number where we line up for the parade. See everyone in Truckee July 4th.
I was talking with Ralph, and all drinks are set for the Orphan meet. We have no sound system for the meet
so if anyone knows of one we can use during the meet please call me with details.
At this time I have no computer so if you need to talk to me give me a call, no e-mail until I have time
to replace the computer.
I hope to see all of our club members at our July 21st meeting.
Studebakerly yours, Pete
Tips from your Club
Finally: a good secret serial number
Many SDCers have been frustrated through the years at being unable to locate their car's “Secret Serial Number” (SSN). At least with the final, basic frame design begun in 1951, a duplicate of the car's Serial Number was to be stamped on one of the lower flanges of the rearmost cross member. To read it easily, it is best to lay on your back and scoot under the rear of the car, looking up at the cross member immediately in front of the rear bumper. Somewhere on that cross member's lower flanges, the flanges parallel to the ground, would have been stamped the car's original serial number.
SECRETARY NOTES:
SAGEBRUSH STUDEBAKER
Minutes May 19, 2009
Meeting was called at 7:05 p.m.
Present: Pete Kronenberg, Jim Sloan, John and Sandy Erb, Gary Crabtree, Louise Young, Art and Carol Van Dyke, Terry Ressler, Carol Case and Ralph Capurro and Larry Schnell. (Happy Birthday to Pat Hansen who was celebrating her 80th birthday, but not with us.)
Charlie Case was out of town, minutes were read by Carol Van Dyke and approved as read.
TREASURER'S REPORT: We balanced. $27.00 was paid to Ralph Capurro for flyer's. 3 have registered so far for the orphan meet, Dean Radtke, Gary
and Jim. We brought in $24.00 in dues and $25.00 miscellaneous. Gary has sent e-mails to those that haven't paid this years dues.
ORPHAN MEET: Terry advised that the 2 trophies in each class will be $190.00 for all. $65.00 for etched sculpture for Best of Show. Larry Schnell thought $65.00 was a little excessive. Carol Case said we are charging to come to the show, Best of Show should be special. We need 3 weeks lead time to order. Ralph said the price for others sounds reasonable, so we could go ahead and order those. Art noted that we send money to other clubs for trophies, we should give to our own. Carol Case said to let Terry get it. A vote was taken and it unanimous that we decide tonight. Pete authorized Terry to spend $65.00 for Best of Show.
TOURS: Ralph announced we lost a member of the club. Kenny and Lynn Wright were members of the club for some time, Lynn passed away in March.
The zone meet in Sacramento this last weekend went well. Those that participated in the event were Terry Ressler, the Erbs, Gary Crabtree, Ralph Capurro, Dean Radtke and Larry Crapo. Vendors area was very small. Stude West was there as well as 6 or 7 outdoor vendors. Approximately 90 cars were there.
Sunday Terry and Ralph went to the Ramsden Ranch get together. There were easily 80 cars there. Nice turnout and good $5.00 lunch with hot dogs and extras.
Sunday the 31st is the sanding party at Fleischmans with their '52 Studebaker fire truck. There will be a BBQ after the sanding. Its pot luck, bring a dish. 2664 Clapham Lane in Minden. Larry Schnell suggested steaks instead of hamburgers. After a vote, steaks won. Ralph will get the steaks.
July 4 is drive your Studebaker day and the Truckee parade.
July 12 is our event at Fuji Park.
Karson Kruisers is having their Run What You Brung the last weekend in June (the 27th)
June 6th is the in-liners meet in Minden, also going on is the arts and craft show, so something for the guys and the gals.
Larry Schnell asked if anyone was going to Cedar Rapids International in July. It is so close to South Bend, and Sasco lease is not being renewed. They are the largest Stude supplier. They need to be out of the building by the end of the year and will have a distress sale. It would be a good opportunity to pick up parts, so Larry is planning on making the trip.
NEW BUSINESS:
Push was discussed. John Erb stated that 2 crews of 6 ROP pushers was promised. Pete says we need back up in case ROP ended up in lock down. Having the Marines again was mentioned, but Gary said they didn't want to listen to us. Gary will talk to their superior to tell Marines to listen to us. Mary Romine is no longer involved in the Hot August Nights push for EAA. Gary said we will have a sign up and workers must work 9 to 3 or 3 to closing. We can't have people leaving without coverage being available.
Gary made motion to close and it was 2nd at 7:55 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Van Dyke

Minutes of the June 16, 2009 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 7:05pm Sixteen members were present including: Pete Kronenberg, Charlie & Carol Case, Gary Crabtree, Terry Ressler, Larry Schnell, Tom & Elizabeth Wise, John Erb, Art & Carol Van Dyke, Pat Hansen, Louise Young, Jim Sloan, Chris Fleischman and his Mother Julie, and Don Wright.
Secretary's Report: Charlie Case read the May minutes prepared by Carol Van Dyke in Charlie's absence. No corrections or additions were noted and Tom Wise moved to accept them as read.
Treasurer's Report: Gary Crabtree announced there was an overall increase of $38, $24 in dues, .37 interest in checking, .40 in savings interest. The Karel Staple Chapter returned our check in the amount of $50 (donation toward a trophy sponsorship) since we had previously sent a check earlier in the year. Gary reported the books are in balance.
Old Business: The Fleischman work party has been postponed until further notice.
Orphan Meet: Terry Ressler brought a sample "Crystal Best of Show" trophy to display which was favorably received. It will be suitably engraved. Gary said he has three registrants for the meet so far, including himself, Dean Radtke, and an entry from Henderson, NV (the owner of the '55 Hudson entered last year. Gary said we should probably have a "long distance" trophy as well. Tom Wise was unable to get the use of the PA system we used last year and will see if the Fuji grounds supervisor may have one we can use. Failing that we will have to seek alternative choices, ie. rented or borrow from someone else. Pete asked if anyone else had obtained raffle prizes for the show but no one answered in the affirmative. He said he will approach T&H Paint and see if they will donate another Maguires polishing kit this year. Pete sought suggestions for other donations, but he was reminded the club had previously agreed to allocate funds from the treasury to purchase raffle prizes with, instead of leaving it to one or two persons.
Pete then asked for ideas of what type of prizes to get. Most suggestions were car oriented, such as, a one year free membership to SDC "Turning Wheels, small 4 watt LED flashlights, a $25.00 gasoline certificate, a case of oil (modern formulations for old cars. Gary said he will cut Pete a check for whatever amount is needed. Terry was also authorized to get an additional trophy for long distance.
Truckee 4th of July Parade, Pete tried getting a hold of Ralph Capurro (Tourmaster) without avail to see if arrangements have been made for an entry permit. Apparently, Ralph is on vacation so Pete will call the Truckee Parade Committee and see if arrangements were made. Pete, Gary and Larry will attend and probably Ralph if he returns in time. They will meet at Boomtown at 9am then tour to Truckee.
New Business: Hot August Nights Silver Car Auction is less than two months away and Gary has very few sign ups from our group. The ROP kids may come again but that is dependent on conditions at the farm. Gary inquired if the Marines could participate again - but he refused to say what the colonel told him. (I think the colonel asked Gary how he would like a free vacation to Afghanistan). Mary Romine will not be available as coordinator for the EAA group. John Erb will be able to provide the contact. Several of our members may be too infirm to participate this year.
Miscellaneous Dribble: Larry Schnell announce SASCO has lost its lease on the old Studebaker parts warehouse and most of the inventory will be sold off in lots. Larry knows the owners personally and will be allowed in to check on original Studebaker upholstery material (30,000 sq. ft.); however, it is not very well organized and its difficult to get matching rolls. Tom Wise is going to fly back to Washington D.C. and take his Harley-Davidson motorcycle out of previous storage and meet Larry in Southbend. It will be interesting to see how Tom manages to bring a roll home on his Harley.
A photo of a 1963 Stude Cruiser was passed around with a note on back to call Kellie at 560-3041 for offers on this outstanding parts car.
The meeting was closed with a motion by Tom and seconded by Pete at 8:30 p.m.
Carol Case won the 50/50 drawing.
Respectfully submitted,
Charlie Case, Secretary

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2006/12/12/what-is-studebaker-up-to/
Studebaker had a nice ad for the 1947 "Starlite". This week, they were pushing "the craftsmanship you can trust in every postwar Studebaker." The ad showed a father and son team working together on a crankshaft. They were Stanley Lipowski and his son Stanley Jr. The point of the ad was that Studebaker had a lot of experience and the cars were made by family men who could be trusted to make a good car, "home owning, home-loving friendly townspeople." Presumably this was in contrast to the unionized dregs-of-society who made all the other cars...

Laughs for the sage.
From Jay Hubbard:
Not a laugh but may start a conversation!
I've been meaning to say a few words on this since our little trip. Remember that this is my opinion and worth just what you are paying for it.
When it comes to fuel supply in our old carburetor cars. Flow and volume are more important than pressure. Modern fuel injected autos run at pressures in excess of 60psi. Those pressures will over come our old needle and seat valves causing fuel to spray and, well some of us saw the result of too much fuel. Our old iron only needs 2-3 psi and enough flow to keep the carb. bowl full.
To this end, if you feel the need to install an electric fuel pump always install a pressure regulator between the pump and the carb. I, and others, have used Holley Fuel Pressure Regulator #HLY-804. Adjustable from 0 to 4 psi and available at Summit Racing and other fine parts stores.
This small unit can be mounted in line right at your carb. or on the pressure side of your old mechanical pump. Easily adjusted using a simple fuel pressure gauge and should give you years of trouble free service. If you find your gas guzzler requires more fuel you can make allowance but remember, at low speed, increase pressure can cause flooding.
Another tip is to use your electric pump only when you need it. Pump the carb. full for starting then shut the pump off. For vapor lock, only rum the pump long enough to over come the problem then shut it off.
Also. When our cars were built most of them had heat shields installed to deflect manifold heat from the fuel system. Many of these shields have been lost over the years. Find out what your car was equipped with and make sure that it is in place. The manufacture spent a bundle figuring these problems out years ago. Use that knowledge.
Your mechanic may feel differently than I. Remember what I said about my opinion. Be guided by his judgment, he has to stand by his work. This is to give you some thing to think about and maybe generate some conversation.
