PRESIDENTIAL NOTES

This is your editor filling in for Pete. We had a great turn out (6 cars) for the car display at the Capital
in Carson City on 4-23-09. Every one in the car display got a lunch, 2 for the price of one at the Nugget.
Jay Hubbard brought the Baker electric from 1909 to the display.
What a great car as the batteries are still good. I hope every one took there Mom out for Mothers day.
Don't for get the Zone Meet coming up on 5-15-09 for 3 days in Sacramento CA.
See our web site for details and registration. See you at the May meeting. Gary

Tips from your Club

Would you clarify the overdrive operation in my Studebaker

Dear all:

Those overdrive units are good but need some getting used to. Many folks are unfamiliar with how they are supposed to work, so diagnosis becomes difficult. Here’s a review. With the overdrive cable pulled out, away from the dash, overdrive is blocked out and will not function. The vehicle will operate exactly as if it has a straight three speed transmission without overdrive. But with the overdrive cable pushed in against the dash bracket, overdrive is available to function. You can push the cable in anytime the truck is either stopped or moving. But you can pull the cable out only when you are stopped or when the engine is pulling the vehicle in direct drive. The governor will not permit overdrive to engage until you get up around 30mph. At that time, the governor closes the ground circuit and allows the solenoid to be energized, engaging overdrive when you let up on the gas momentarily to release the engine’s pull on the drive shaft. When you start from a stop with the cable in, it will freewheel as you’ve noticed- until the overdrive engages, which happens when you let up on the accelerator momentarily. Or, it will freewheel if the governor cut-in speed has not yet been reached. It will stay in overdrive until you slow down to where the governor interrupts the circuit, or if you press the accelerator all the way to the floor to drop it out of overdrive and return to direct drive. When you floor the accelerator, the kick down switch on the linkage interrupts the circuit momentarily. That allows the overdrive to shift back to direct until you let up on the pedal. This feature allows more speed when you need to pass or climb a grade. When you want to use engine braking to slow the vehicle, first push the accelerator down to kick down. When the transmission drops back to direct drive, immediately pull the cable out. Then you can let up on the accelerator and you will be in direct drive with overdrive locked out no matter what you do.. .because the overdrive handle has been pulled out, disabling overdrive capability. You have to be quick about it, but I have been doing that ever since I started driving Studebaker's over 50 years ago. (I showed my 20 year old grandson how to work it and he thought it was pretty neat, like an automatic fourth gear. In fact, that’s exactly what it is.) Another thing: The shop manual recommends using 40-weight, non-detergent motor oil or 90-weight GL1 mineral oil. If you use EP oil (oil with Extreme Pressure additives), the sprag and synchronizers will slip or will not shift as smoothly. Hope this helps. Have fun with that truck: I have a ‘57 1/2 ton that I’ve enjoyed over 33 years and nearly 300,000 miles!

SECRETARY NOTES:

SAGEBRUSH STUDEBAKER

Minutes of March 17, 2009 Meeting

Meeting was called to order by President Pete Kronenberg at 7 P.M

Those present: Gary Crabtree, Larry Crapo, Pete Kronenberg, Terry Ressler, Jim Sloan, Louise Young, Carol and Art Van Dyke, Steve, Julie and Chris Fleischman.

Charlie Case, Secretary, was sick, therefor no minutes were read of the February meeting. Charlie's exceptional devoted sister, Carol Van Dyke gladly took minutes for him. Please note Carol is not as eloquent, articulate or witty as Charlie, so please bear with us here.

Treasurers Report: Gary advised we made $109 last month, $84.00 in dues, $11.00 raffle, $14.19, .32 and .35 in interest.

Tour Chairman: Ralph handed out copies of the Orphan and More flyer. Pete wanted to know if it will be on different color paper. He suggested color for bulletin boards and white to hand out. Ralph thanked the Schnells for their work on the flyer. Ralph went over the different points such as poker walk, trophies, era music, door prizes, there is a $3.00 discount to pre-register. Begins at 8:30 with awards at 3:30. Bring own lunch, club provides soft drinks and water. Art thought the 1950 category should start at 1949. The committee will resolve that issue at the next committee meeting. Art asked what the cost of each trophy was last year. They thought it was $8.00 or $9.00 each cause we had some trophies to use. They decided to go with a plaque rather than the bowling type. Art suggested getting a piece of crystal for Best of Show as something different.

Ralph also handed out an events calendar. It lists various event that may be of interest to members. He went over all of them through October. Of interest in the near future are: on the 28th is a local club event at the Carson Senior Citizens Club, April 23 is the car display at Capital Mall from 9:30 A.M. to 2 P.M. and May 15, 16, 17 is the Zone meet, which Gary has the registration form on our web site.

New Business

Chris was asked how his fire truck was coming along. He has the gas tank off and is cleaning and sanding every day. It starts, but not running yet. Julie offered previously to have a BBQ at their home for the club and it was decided we could make it into a "sanding party". It will be decided at the next meeting when the "party" will be held. Terry has a compressor he will bring and if Chris wants to get some sand paper, the club will reimburse him.

Ralph suggested getting name tags for members. The cost would be about $6.00 each. Ralph made a motion for $100 for name tags, Terry 2nd the motion. 3 did not vote and 1 opposed, 7 agreed.

Ralph heard disturbing comment on news tonight that we should keep up with. The clunker bill/clean air - California lawmakers buy up old cars and crush them so they don't have to clean up environment. So parts are no longer available. Feds are getting into it where if you get rid of old car you get a $5,000 credit for new car. Just heads up.

Gary said he paid $25.00 for non-profit from his personal funds and wants ok to reimburse. It was granted.

Gary asked if anyone wanted to take over as historian and be in charge of the photo album and taking pictures of club events. Terry volunteered.

Art made a motion to close the meeting and Larry 2nd it, Meeting ended at 8:00 P.M.

Art won the raffle.

Respectfully submitted by Carol Van Dyke

Sagebrush Chapter SDC

Minutes of April 21, 2009

Members in attendance: Pete Kronenberg, Ralph Capurro, Gary Crabtree, Charlie and Carol Case, Terry Ressler, Jay Hubbard, Pat Hansen and Louise Young, Art & Carol Van Dyke, Larry and Mary Schnell, Tom & Elizabeth Wise, Jim Sloan, Chris & Julie Fleischman. A good turnout included 19 members in attendance.

SECRETARY'S REPORT: Charlie read the March minutes, there were no corrections.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Gary Crabtree reported expenses as $52.50, $24 dues received, $10 raffle 50/50.  The bank account was balanced with the bank statement.

TOUR MASTER'S REPORT: Ralph Capurro gave a run down on various meets in the area, and asked those who attended them to give a report on their experience. The next scheduled will be a display of our Studebakers on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the State Legislature. Ralph asked how many members will plan to attend and seven members raised their hands. Including Pete Kronenberg, Jay Hubbard, Charlie Case, Art Van Dyke, Jim Sloan and Gary Crabtree. This biannual car show promotes public interest and promotes better relations with the State Legislatures on antique auto legislation. Cars will be displayed on the Capital Mall and will be parked on the cement. Drip pans will be provided. Jay Hubbard will bring a 1914 Detroit Electric (going antique "Green") from the Harrah Auto Collection. The club will meet at the Harbor Freight parking lot at 9 a. m. and convoy to the Capitol via Carson St. (US 395) and enter the grounds from the 5th St South side entrance. Other tours/activities can be found in the tour schedule prepared by Ralph. If you do not have one please contact him at 750-6709. Larry Schnell said he wouldn't be able to attend the Karel Staple Chapter annual meeting in Auburn on May 19th because his son Steve is graduating from College that day - the group applauded Steve's success.

MAY MEETING BBQ & SANDING PARTY: Julie Fleischman agreed to host the May meeting at their home at 2664 Clapham Lane in Minden. Final arrangements are to be made; however it will have to begin early afternoon and members able to participate in the fire truck sanding party should wear work clothes. The club will provide the sanding paper and be prepared to get wet. Terry and Charlie volunteered to bring compressors and air sanding equipment. Following the work party there will be a pot luck BBQ dinner. The club will pay for the meat cost and members are requested to bring a side dish. More information will be provided prior to the meeting by Ralph.

ORPHAN MEET REPORT:An open discussion ensued regarding clarification whether trophies or plaques would be awarded. Larry Schnell said the flyer he designed stated the word "Trophies" would be awarded in the various categories and felt we should stick with this theme. Considerable discussion ensued; Elizabeth Wise feels the "trophy terminology" is interchangeable with awards of a "plaque". Finally a vote of hands agreed to use trophies to be prepared by Terry Ressler. The decision was approved by a 7-3 vote. Terry will have a cost comparison available at the next meeting. The best of Show award will be a crystal (ball) or bowl. Two trophies will be awarded in each class.

Ralph will mail copies of the flyer's to various clubs and he asked members at large to display the flyer's at various business and car shows in their locations. Colored flyer's should be used at the business locations and the black and white flyer's should be distributed by members going to car meets or hand out to orphan members at large.

Orphan classes will be 1900 to 1950 - 1951 to 1960 - 1961 to 1970 and 1971 to 1999, two awards will be given in each class 1st and 2nd with one orphan Best of Show award to be given. Only two trophies will be awarded in the Non-Orphan Class. A separate class may have to made for trucks - pick ups or large tractor trailer vehicles, this will have to be decided by the Orphan Meet Committee. There will be a poker walk with group picnic section (bring your own lunch) drinks will be provided by the club, name brand to be used IE. Coke, Pepsi, regular and diet. Music will be provided and Tom Wise will see if he can borrow the same equipment used last year. Flyer's will be passed out at the ATHS meet (Antique Truck Historical Society) in Plymouth California on May 25th. About five club members plan on attending.

OLD BUSINESS: A motion was made by Jay Hubbard to send the Karel Staple Chapter a $50 donation toward a trophy, as has been the custom in the past. Motion 2nd by Ralph and was passed. Gary will send them a check. Jay also announced that a plan to form an "American Car Collection" in Winnemucca has failed. The two hundred cars already collected will be sold by auction in early June. Cars consist of various collector cars to hot rods and antique and vintage vehicles. Call Jay for further information at 425-0790.

Tom Wise is taking a trip to Ohio to visit Phantom Upholstery to check material for his 48, and will bring information about his experience to a future meeting.

A motion by Gary to adjourn the meeting was passed at 8:10 p.m

The 50/50 drawing was won by Louise Young. Respectfully submitted by Charlie Case.

Round Nevada Classic “care” Tour

Philanthropy is priority number one on annual Nevada car tour.

By Noelle Machado May/June 2009

“High profile, below the radar” is how Gary Davis and Alan “Big Al” Crawley describe the ’Round Nevada Classic Car Tour, due to the prominent characters who have joined the event over the years. There have been Microsoft executives and federal and state judges, but it’s not the names that are important on this journey (in fact, participants are asked not to divulge their last names, and the tour is unaffiliated with a specific club or group). It’s the cause.

The ’Round Nevada Classic Car Tour was started in 2005 by Davis and a small group of friends who wanted to do something different: tour Nevada in their classic cars and put on car shows, but help people at the same time. As they travel to various small towns, they support charitable organizations and give 100-percent access to their vehicles. “They can have sidewalk sales, take pictures, bring in the local car clubs, anything they can derive from the cars they can have. It’s about the benefit that others get from our being there,” Davis says.

Go to 'nevadamagazine.com' and put 'classic care tour' in the search field and read the complete article and see the photo.

Please come to the meeting and ask for help to get your Studebaker's back on the road. We can help. All Club members.

What IS Studebaker up to?

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2006/12/12/what-is-studebaker-up-to/

Studebaker had a nice ad for the 1947 "Starlite". This week, they were pushing "the craftsmanship you can trust in every postwar Studebaker." The ad showed a father and son team working together on a crankshaft. They were Stanley Lipowski and his son Stanley Jr. The point of the ad was that Studebaker had a lot of experience and the cars were made by family men who could be trusted to make a good car, "home owning, home-loving friendly townspeople." Presumably this was in contrast to the unionized dregs-of-society who made all the other cars...
