Keeping Your Cool
One chronic complaint in the old car hobby is over heating. This can have a variety of sources, including the simple stress of asking a decades old cooling system to keep an engine cool in a hot, slow moving parade. If you have a Studebaker V-8 that overheats and you have recently installed a reproduction water pump, here is some important information from log time SDC member and excellent mechanic Scott Stastny of Deluxe Autowerks in West Chicago IL. It comes via Robert Kapteyn. We thank Robert for sending it along, and for Scott's research to make the following determination:
Scott had been working on a 1953 Starliner with a 1963 drive train that had bee plagued with overheating. Scott used modeling clay and found .128” clearance between the impeller and the water pump housing. He then located an NOS Studebaker pump and determined there was only .020” clearance between the housing and the impeller! In other words, the reproduction pump had over 6 times the clearance between the pump impeller and the housing! This would clearly result in greatly reduced coolant flow. Further the reproduction pump had smaller impeller blades and a thicker gasket! Both of these items would only increase the cooling flow problem with the reproduction pump.
There are several ways to identify suspect reproduction pumps. The casting number on the reproduction pump Scott analyzed was 527070, the same as on the NOS pump. However, the numbers were 5/16” high, versus only 1/4” high on the NOS pump.
There is a Studebaker Letter germane to this discussion. It is #S-1048, Dated July 10, 1962. It states that the distance between the mountin flange and the outer tip of the impeller should be .938”. Scott measured the reproduction pump and found it to be only .834”.
The easiest way to tell the difference is to examine the hub onto which the fan blade bolts. On the reproduction pump, the hub measured .280” thick and fully machined. On the NOS pump, the flange was only .230” thick and was sheared and rough on the edges.
Not all reproduction pumps are bad but they should be checked to make sure you V-8 will have the correct water coolant flow. Scott found another reproduction pump that had the exact dimensions of the NOS pump, and was of the same design. Installing that pump on the 1953 Starliner in question solved the overheating problem on that car.

SECRETARY NOTES:
SAGEBRUSH CHAPTER SDC
Minutes of November 2008 Meeting
President Schnell opened the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Round Table Pizza in Carson City. Seventeen members were present including; Larry & Mary Schnell, Gary Crabtree, Pete Kronenberg, Charlie & Carol Case, Art & Carol Van Dyke, Ralph Capurro, Terry Ressler, Larry Craco, Chris Fleischmann and his mother, Julie, Jay & Tina Hubbard, Tom & Liz Wise.
Secretary's Report: The secretary read the minutes of the October meeting and noted a correction as follows: "The club will pay $20.00 per member" instead of $20.00 per couple as previously reported. A question was asked, "What the cost limit was for the dirty Santa gift exchange?" It was agreed that it would be a maximum of $10 to $15.00, however, it is strictly voluntary, and it is up to the individual member.
Treasurer's
Report: The current
balance is $5,324.
Old Business: The Sparks Christmas Parade is December 6th and the $40 entry fee has been paid according to Pete. The parade will begin at 1:00 p.m. but entries will need to be lined up in the staging area earlier. Carson City members will meet at the WalMart - Round Table Pizza parking lot near 395 freeway and College Parkway at 10 a.m.
Christmas Dinner Party: Pete reaffirmed our reservation at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden on December 9th. Pete must receive your RSVP by December 5th. Member’s share of the cost is $15.50 for each person attending or $31.00 per couple. Dinner choices are salmon, chicken or prime rib. Rooms are available at the Inn under a group rate of $62.00 in the event of inclement weather. Call Pete at 782-4433.
Elections: Nominations of club officers was confirmed and accepted by majority vote. 2009 officers are Pete Kronenberg, President; Ralph Capurro, Vice President; Charlie Case, Secretary; Gary Crabtree, Treasurer.
New Business: Ralph Capurro (2009 tour master) announced the adopt-a-car sign up was due and the fee will be $100 a year. Larry Craco made a motion to continue our support, 2nd by Gary and accepted. Ralph discussed having a sweetheart tour on Valentines Day and will arrange a schedule of events. Discussion also centered on the Orphan Meet and its future. Pro and con comments were made ranging from discontinuing it to limiting it to a joint picnic event without judging - a show of hands was taken in favor of continuing the event. Pete recommended tabling further action until after the first of the year. Ralph announced Tom Wise bought a 1948 Champion convertible from Bart Ray.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 after Larry Craco gave his "show and tell" humorous account of how he got his first car at age 15 1/2 and the trouble and tribulations he got into with it.
Respectfully submitted,
Carlie Case, Secretary

Laughs for the sage.
From Jay Hubbard:
An armed hooded robber bursts into the Bank of Ireland and forces the tellers to load a sack full of cash. On his way out the door with the loot one brave Irish customer grabs the hood an pulls it off revealing the robber's face. The robber shoots the guy without hesitation! He then looks around the bank to see if anyone else has seen him. One of the tellers is looking straight at him and the robber shoots him also. Everyone by now is very scared and looking down at the floor. Did anyone else see my face?' calls the robber. There are a few moments silence, then one elderly Irish gent, looking down, tentatively raises his hand and says: 'I think me wife may have caught a glimpse....'
